Moleskines and Sharpie Pens

This is something I've been thinking about for a very long time, and I'm nervous about it.

Most of you know that I recently graduated from BYU in the Advertising program as a Copywriter. For those of you who still think that means I do legal work and licensing for advertisements, what it actually means is that I write. In addition to all the conceptual steps of the creative process, my main role in making advertisements is the words. The cheesy headlines, the emotional scripts, the funny brand tweets, and the painfully cliche Facebook posts. All me!

What you don't know is that by going through that program, spending hours upon hours thinking, writing, writing some more, thinking some more, and really opening up my brain, something new came out in me.

When I say 'new' I don't mean "something that I haven't seen before." I mean something that came back to me. When I was little, 1st grade specifically, I would write and illustrate my own makeshift books and give them to people. My mom said I made hundreds, but gave them all away. But that's what I did. That's how I was creative.

I'm not telling you that this is my calling in life. I'm not telling you that I had this quarter-life breakthrough where I found out I'm actually a child prodigy who has once again bloomed. What I'm telling you is that by practicing my writing for hours and hours, writing once again became a huge way for me to express myself.

>>> Which leads me to the purpose of this post. For the last 3 years I've been carrying around a Moleskine and a Sharpie pen. I've filled nearly 4 of these notebooks with ideas, concepts, attempted sketches, and above all, writing. And I want to start sharing my personal writing with you.

Yep, you.

When I say personal, I mean personal. Some of this stuff is years old, and nobody saw it until a writing class I had this last year in which I so nervously read my writing aloud to a group of 20 people and almost cried. I've never felt so vulnerable in my entire life. I didn't even show Casey until pretty recently.

Any artist or creative will be able to relate to this when I tell you it's weird to share something so deeply personal to you. So deeply attached to your heart or mind or soul. That's what these are for me. Okay, well, some of them at least. Some are serious, some are about love. Some are fun, funny, or just plain stupid.

I'm nervous because I don't know how people will take the words that I write. The deep stuff, I mean. When you put something personal to you out in the world for people to see, you're opening yourself up to the good and the bad.

So here I am, opening my Moleskine up to you. All I ask is that you're honest. If you love it, awesome. If you hate it, even better. If you relate to it, or if it makes you feel something, let me know.

  1. I absolutely love your blog! And I'm so excited to read your writing. It's way scary putting something super personal out for everyone to see, but I feel like that is the best way to have an impact on the people around you. Keep doing what you're doing cute girl!!

  3. Usually has tungsten carbide, steel or brass finishing. A ballpoint pen ordinarily measures between 0.7 to 1.2 millimeters and works by meting out thick oil based ink by navigating a minute hard orb. Ballpoint pens are very popular because the ink instantaneously dries upon contact with paper, plus, they are inexpensive and have a long life span. This type of pen is used in schools, colleges, universities and offices.campo marzio pen
